International News: Maduro requests Court Audit of Presidential Election amid mounting criticism from observers

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: President Nicolás Maduro has called for Venezuela’s high court to audit the recent presidential election, following allegations of electoral fraud from opposition leaders, the Associated Press reports.

However, this request has drawn significant criticism from international observers who argue that the court’s close ties to the government undermine the potential for an impartial review.

On Wednesday, Maduro approached the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) in Caracas, asking the court to examine the election results.

Addressing the media, Maduro expressed his willingness to cooperate fully with any investigation, stating, “I throw myself before justice” and affirming his readiness to be questioned and investigated.

This move marks Maduro’s first acknowledgment of calls for increased transparency regarding the election.

Yet, concerns about the TSJ’s independence persist.

The court’s justices are appointed by federal officials and confirmed by the National Assembly, which is heavily influenced by Maduro’s supporters.

The Carter Center, which sent a monitoring team to oversee the election, has criticized Maduro’s request for a court-led audit.

Jennie K. Lincoln, head of the delegation, expressed doubts about the court’s ability to deliver an unbiased assessment. “You have another government institution, which is appointed by the government, to verify the government numbers for the election results, which are in question,” Lincoln stated. “This is not an independent assessment.”

The Atlanta-based organization also reported difficulties in verifying the official results and denounced a “complete lack of transparency” in the announcement of Maduro’s victory.

Despite the Carter Center’s deployment of 17 observers, the group found the process lacking in openness.

Opposition figures, including Edmundo González and Maria Corina Machado, claim they have obtained more than two-thirds of the tally sheets from the electronic voting machines used in the election. They assert that the release of these documents would demonstrate Maduro’s defeat.

In response to these claims, Maduro alleged that his administration was the target of a plot and suggested that the electoral system was subject to hacking.
