By Zoila Palma: Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and Canada on Thursday issued a joint statement condemning recent developments in the Gulf and signaling readiness to support efforts to secure maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz while stabilizing global energy markets.
The countries strongly criticized Iran’s actions, stating, “We condemn in the strongest terms recent attacks by Iran on unarmed commercial vessels in the Gulf, attacks on civilian infrastructure including oil and gas installations, and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces.”
They also raised alarm over rising tensions, adding, “We express our deep concern about the escalating conflict.”
According to Reuters, the group of countries called for immediate de-escalation.
“We call on Iran to cease immediately its threats, laying of mines, drone and missile attacks and other attempts to block the Strait to commercial shipping, and to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2817,” the statement said.
It further underscored that “Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law,” warning that disruptions could have global consequences.
The countries said they are prepared to assist in ensuring safe passage and welcomed coordinated international responses, including measures by the International Energy Agency to release strategic petroleum reserves.
