International News: King Charles shows off dance moves in parade during Caribbean tour in The Bahamas

By Zoila Palma:  King Charles III set aside royal formality on Wednesday, joining a lively Jankunu parade during the second day of his nine-day Caribbean tour in The Bahamas, BBC reports.

Carrying maracas in the colours of the Bahamian flag, the King danced alongside performers dressed in colourful costumes and feathered headdresses as cheering spectators watched. The cultural celebration offered a lighter moment during a visit that has also brought renewed attention to the painful history of slavery and calls for reparations.

Earlier in the day, Charles paid tribute to fallen members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, laying a wreath at the Flamingo Monument in honour of four marines killed in May 1980 when Cuban MiG fighter aircraft sank HMBS Flamingo. He also visited the Bahamas Boxing Academy in Nassau, where he watched young fighters spar and met aspiring athletes. The academy trains boys and girls between the ages of eight and 18, and the King encouraged the youngsters as they pursue their sporting ambitions.

The King also visited Bonefish Pond National Park, where conservation efforts are helping protect vulnerable coastal ecosystems from climate change. The site, once used as a rubbish dump, has been transformed into a protected wetland covering approximately 1,235 acres of mangroves.

During his visit, King Charles walked along a boardwalk through the wetlands and spoke with students conducting fieldwork, including those interested in marine biology. Environmental protection and climate resilience are among the key themes of his Caribbean tour.

Despite the celebrations, the visit has also highlighted calls for Britain to acknowledge its historical role in the transatlantic slave trade and provide reparations.

On his arrival in The Bahamas on Tuesday, the King acknowledged the suffering caused by slavery, saying the country’s culture was “born out of darkness” and that it was right to recognise historical injustices.

The Caribbean tour continues in Guyana, with engagements focused on the environment and biodiversity, before the King travels to Antigua and Barbuda, where Queen Camilla will join him for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
