By Zoila Palma: A Kenyan police officer serving with the multinational security force in Haiti has been killed during a confrontation with gang members, BBC reports.
The officer, the first casualty of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, was injured in Artibonite, north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Despite being airlifted to a hospital, he died shortly afterward.
The MSS was deployed in June 2024 to combat gang violence, which has ravaged Haiti, leaving over 5,500 people dead and over a million displaced.
The officer was shot during a security operation in Pont-Sondé, and the MSS vowed to continue fighting the gangs.
Despite a recent increase in Kenyan officers, the multinational force remains outgunned by gangs armed with powerful smuggled weapons.
The mission’s future is uncertain, with U.S. funding support in question following a freeze on foreign aid.
