By Zoila Palma: Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness, toured the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) exhibition booth following the official opening of the 20th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA 2026) on Sunday, September 27, at the Ocean Coral Spring Resort in Trelawny, Jamaica.
The event brought together regional leaders, policymakers, researchers and agriculture stakeholders to discuss the future of Caribbean food systems.
Delivering the keynote address under the theme “The New F.A.C.E of Caribbean Food Systems,” Holness emphasized the need to increase agricultural productivity, encourage strategic investment and strengthen research-driven solutions to improve long-term food security across the region.
During his tour of the exhibition centre, Holness engaged with CARDI’s interactive displays and learned about the institute’s applied research, crop trials and agricultural innovations. CARDI representatives highlighted initiatives aimed at increasing regional food supplies and strengthening the resilience of Caribbean agriculture.
The discussions included germplasm conservation, climate-smart vegetable production and regional import substitution programmes designed to reduce reliance on imported goods.
