By Zoila Palma: Today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a sharp rebuke at the United Nations General Assembly, accusing some Western nations of rewarding violence by recognizing Palestinian statehood, Reuters report.
He said that such moves send the message that “murdering Jews pays off,” reflecting Israel’s growing frustration as allies like Australia, Britain, Canada and France announced their support for a Palestinian state in an effort to preserve the two-state solution and bring the Gaza war to an end.
Netanyahu’s address came as Israel faced deepening international isolation over its nearly two-year war against Hamas, which has left more than 65,000 people in Gaza dead, according to local health officials, and much of the enclave in ruins.
Delegates including Belize walked out before his speech, while others in the balcony gave him a standing ovation.
He accused world leaders of caving under pressure from “biased media” and “antisemitic mobs,” while insisting that many privately thank Israel for intelligence that has thwarted terror attacks abroad.
The Israeli leader also spoke directly to the hostages still held in Gaza, vowing they had not been forgotten.
Hamas has offered to release the remaining captives—believed to be about 20 alive out of an original 48—in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal and an end to the war.
Netanyahu, however, pledged to continue fighting until Hamas is dismantled, even as pressure mounts from hostage families and a weary Israeli public. He said his speech was broadcast into Gaza in hopes the captives could hear his words.
