By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam were attacked by anti-Israel protesters Thursday night as violence erupted outside a stadium where Maccabi Tel Aviv FC was playing Ajax, Fox News reports.
Following the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Dutch authorities to enhance security for Israelis, and Israeli air carrier El Al dispatched planes to evacuate citizens.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had initially planned a rescue mission, but later stood down.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, up to 20 Israelis were injured in the attacks, and seven remain unaccounted for.
The Amsterdam police confirmed that 62 people were arrested in connection with the incidents.
Netanyahu described the assault as “premeditated” and urged Dutch authorities to address the security concerns, while Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the violence, comparing it to the horrors of the October 7 Hamas attacks in Israel.
The incident has sparked international outcry, with Herzog calling it “the most alarming thing to happen to Jews since October 7.”
The violence followed reports of provocative behavior by some Maccabi fans, including anti-Arab chants and actions that inflamed tensions.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the actions of Maccabi fans, who were reportedly involved in the desecration of Palestinian flags.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the antisemitic attacks “unacceptable” and vowed to prosecute those responsible.
“Muslims with Palestinian flags hunting down Jews. I will NOT accept that. NEVER…..The authorities will be held accountable for their failure to protect the Israeli citizens. Never again,” populist Dutch political leader Geert Wilders of the anti-Muslim immigration Freedom Party in the Netherlands said.
