By Zoila Palma: Today, Israel marked 3 years since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack from Gaza, with memorial ceremonies held across the country alongside anti-government demonstrations. The attack saw thousands of Hamas-led terrorists cross into southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages to Gaza, according to Israeli authorities.
Memorial events began at 6:29 a.m., the time the assault began, with bereaved families and survivors returning to communities and sites where some of the deadliest battles took place.
At Kibbutz Kfar Aza, residents held a vigil for those killed, while a roll call of victims was read as a trumpet played a solemn call. Many residents of the community remain displaced three years after the attack.
The anniversary also brought renewed political protests, with demonstrators briefly blocking the Ayalon Highway in central Israel for a moment of silence.
Protesters gathered at junctions across the country and outside the homes of government ministers, while activists dyed the fountain at Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Square red. At noon, the October Council, representing survivors and bereaved families, held a nationwide minute of silence.
Further commemorations were scheduled throughout the day, including an evening gathering at Kibbutz Re’im, where the Nova music festival was held and hundreds were killed or taken hostage.
