By Breaking Belize News Staff: Israeli forces on Friday intercepted the last boat of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which sought to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, AP report.
The vessel, the Marinette, had been trailing behind after the Israeli navy stormed 41 other boats earlier in the week, detaining some 450 activists from more than 40 countries. The flotilla, carrying a symbolic amount of aid, was the largest attempt yet to challenge the blockade of war-torn Gaza.
The detentions sparked demonstrations across Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
In Italy, workers and students joined a one-day strike called by major unions, shutting down schools, trains, and flights. Protests also erupted in Spain, France, Switzerland, and other countries, where thousands demanded an end to the Gaza war and the release of the activists.
Among those detained were prominent figures such as climate activist Greta Thunberg, South African MP Mandla Mandela, and several European lawmakers.
Four Italian parliamentarians were swiftly deported back to Rome on Friday. “We had a very difficult night, now we must bring everyone home,” Italian lawmaker Marco Croatti said after arriving in Rome.
Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited Ashdod, where activists were processed for deportation. In footage circulating online, Ben-Gvir accused the flotilla participants of supporting “terrorism” and mocked their aid mission, while some activists responded with chants of “Free Palestine.”
Despite the flotilla’s interception, organizers vowed to continue their efforts, with another nine-boat convoy already en route across the Mediterranean.
