By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack, which involved firing 181 missiles at Israel, the Israeli government is weighing a range of military options, including strikes on Iranian oil rigs and nuclear sites, the Times of Israel reports.
Reports indicate that Israeli officials are also contemplating targeted assaults on Iran’s air defense systems.
The potential for an aggressive military response could further escalate tensions in a region already marked by conflict, particularly as the ongoing war, which began following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, approaches its one-year mark.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting with security officials on Wednesday to discuss possible retaliatory measures.
Following an extensive security cabinet meeting, there was a consensus to respond militarily, though specifics remain undecided as the Israeli leadership seeks to coordinate with the United States.
Netanyahu has declared that Iran “made a big mistake” and will face consequences for its actions.
Analysts suggest that Israel may take a more assertive approach this time, especially given the weakened state of Iranian proxies like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The U.S. government has expressed its support for Israel and indicated a willingness to assist in any potential military response.
While there is a consensus among U.S. lawmakers on backing Israel, there is growing concern about escalations.
