By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Israel and Hamas have agreed to a deal to pause fighting in Gaza and facilitate the phased release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, CNN reports.
The deal, expected to begin Sunday, will see Hamas release 33 hostages, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
The news comes after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s recent remarks that “all hell will break out” if Hamas does not agree to release hostages it has held in Gaza by the time he returns to the White House on Jan. 20.
Trump just confirmed the deal saying “WE HAVE A DEAL FOR THE HOSTAGES IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THEY WILL BE RELEASED SHORTLY. THANK YOU!”
This agreement marks the first significant break in fighting in over a year, providing a reprieve for Gaza’s civilians and allowing humanitarian aid to enter.
The second phase, aimed at ending the war, will start after 16 days.
