By Zoila Palma:  At least 12 U.S. service members were wounded, five seriously, in an Iranian missile and drone strike on Prince Sultan Air Base near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, officials reported Friday.

The attack marks one of the most significant breaches of U.S. air defenses since the conflict with Iran began last month, NPR reports.

A U.S. official indicated some aircraft at the base were damaged.

Iran released satellite imagery showing burning aircraft at the facility, claiming one aerial refueling tanker was destroyed and three others damaged.

The Pentagon has reported a total of 13 U.S. troops killed and more than 300 injured across the region since the start of hostilities, which Iran says are retaliatory against U.S. operations.

The strike coincided with heightened tensions across the Middle East. Israel intercepted a missile from Yemen for the first time during the conflict, while Iran reported damage to multiple industrial sites within its territory. Israeli forces have continued strikes on Iran’s nuclear-related facilities, including a heavy water reactor.
