By Zoila Palma: An Iranian missile struck Israel’s prestigious Weizmann Institute of Science early Sunday, heavily damaging labs and halting years of scientific work.
The attack, part of an escalating direct conflict between Iran and Israel, marks a chilling shift: Israeli scientists are now in the crosshairs, AP reports.
Though no casualties were reported, multiple buildings were hit, including life sciences labs.
Researchers say years of work were wiped out.
The Weizmann Institute, known for breakthroughs in life sciences, chemistry, and physics, is among Israel’s top research institutions.
Its ties to the defense sector may have made it a target, experts say. Iran had previously attempted to target Weizmann scientists through espionage, according to Israeli intelligence.
Weizmann has suspended operations as the campus remains closed for cleanup and damage assessment. Rebuilding could take years.
