By Zoila Palma: Iran has proposed reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz if the United States agrees to lift its blockade and bring an end to the ongoing conflict, according to regional officials.
The offer, delivered to Washington through Pakistan, would delay discussions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, AP reports.
However, the proposal appears unlikely to gain acceptance from U.S. President Donald Trump, as it does not address key issues that led to the outbreak of war between the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signaled firm opposition to any agreement that excludes nuclear restrictions, emphasizing the need to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Despite a fragile ceasefire, tensions remain high as both countries continue a standoff over the vital waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping route through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply passes during peacetime. The U.S. blockade aims to cut off Iran’s oil exports, limiting its revenue and potentially forcing production shutdowns due to storage constraints.
The closure of the strait has had significant global repercussions, including rising oil and gasoline prices, which have placed additional pressure on the Trump administration ahead of key midterm elections.
