International News: International Monetary Fund says Mexico needs greater efforts to reduce debt

By Zoila Palma:  The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Mexico needs to make greater efforts to place its public debt on a declining path, despite continued fiscal consolidation in 2026. The assessment followed an Article IV consultation mission to Mexico City in September, with the IMF projecting economic growth of 1.5% in 2026 and 1.8% in 2027.

The IMF said Mexico should focus on increasing government revenue, improving spending priorities and encouraging greater private-sector participation to protect investments that support economic growth, Reuters report.

The IMF also noted that while headline inflation is close to the central bank’s target, underlying price pressures and inflation expectations remain elevated.

The IMF warned that geopolitical tensions and the effects of El Niño could place additional pressure on prices and delay Mexico’s return to the central bank’s 3% inflation target until early 2028.
