By Zoila Palma: For the first time in months, international journalists were escorted by the Israeli military through Gaza City on Friday, offering a rare, tightly controlled glimpse into the heart of a territory devastated by nearly two years of war, AP reports.

The visit came as Israel intensified its offensive to root out Hamas fighters who, according to Israeli officials, continue to operate from tunnels and buildings across the city. Soldiers showed reporters a hospital once run by Jordan, where they claimed a Hamas tunnel was discovered—an assertion Jordanian officials later denied.

The tour revealed a city reduced to rubble.

Entire neighborhoods lay in ruins, with few signs of life. Journalists traveled through the Netzarim corridor, now a military zone dividing northern and southern Gaza. At the former Jordanian hospital in the Sabra neighborhood, excavators worked amid gunfire and distant explosions.

According to the World Health Organization, 22 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are no longer operational, and the remaining facilities struggle to function under the continuing bombardment. Israeli officials maintained that military operations are conducted with caution to minimize civilian casualties, but Gaza’s Health Ministry reports more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began.

The visit came as Israel began implementing the first phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan to end the war and secure the release of remaining hostages.

Hamas has reportedly agreed to parts of the deal but insists on further negotiations.

Meanwhile, Gaza City—once home to a million residents—remains a shattered landscape.

Many have fled south under Israeli evacuation orders, but thousands remain trapped, displaced, or unwilling to abandon what’s left of their homes amid one of the world’s most dire humanitarian crises.
