International News: India’s growing dependence on Chinese imports raises alarm

By Zoila Palma:  India’s dependence on Chinese imports has continued to grow despite efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on its larger neighbor, CNN reports.

While India has successfully reduced Chinese dominance in some sectors, its trade deficit with China has increased sharply, rising from $44 billion in 2020 to $112 billion this year, even as diplomatic and security relations deteriorated following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.

The toy industry has emerged as a rare example of India reducing its dependence on Chinese goods.

After India raised tariffs on imported toys from 20% to as high as 70% and introduced stricter quality controls, toy imports fell from nearly $300 million in 2020 to about $100 million this year, while exports increased from roughly $129 million to $200 million. China previously accounted for about 70% of India’s toy market.

However, Chinese products remain deeply embedded in India’s industrial economy, particularly through components and raw materials used in domestic manufacturing.

China now supplies more than 30% of India’s industrial imports, with major imports including electrical machinery and electronics, industrial machinery, chemicals, plastics, battery inputs and solar equipment. Experts warn that disruptions to these supplies could affect not only consumer goods but also India’s domestic production.

Analysts say reducing the imbalance will require India to strengthen local manufacturing, improve infrastructure, lower production costs and expand access to foreign markets.
