By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, Police in Haiti utilized tear gas to disperse crowds from a security perimeter encircling the National Palace, while armed soldiers monitored the diplomatic entrance of the international airport.

The National Palace has faced repeated assaults from gangs, resulting in the paralysis of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

A nine-member presidential transition council is set to be inaugurated at the palace, with speculation suggesting it could occur this week, although no official date has been announced.

This council is anticipated to appoint an interim prime minister and assist in establishing a government tasked with organizing future elections in the Caribbean nation.

In addition, the U.S. military announced that it has reinforced security measures at its embassy.

Outgoing Prime Minister Ariel Henry has long advocated for international troops to aid in combating the gangs, but progress has been slow.

Plans were put on hold when he announced his intention to step down in March, pending the formation of a new interim government.

Since then, attacks have intensified while the transition process has stagnated.

Gangs are accused of widespread atrocities, including rape, ransom kidnappings, and indiscriminate killings.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in hundreds of thousands being internally displaced and millions facing severe hunger, exacerbated by the closure of vital ports.
