By Zoila Palma: Hurricane Polo made landfall in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula early Tuesday, bringing life-threatening winds and the threat of flash flooding, AP reports.
The Category 2 hurricane struck just south of Las Barrancas with maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour before weakening as it moved northeast.
By 5:00 a.m. local time, Polo’s maximum sustained winds had decreased to approximately 75 miles per hour as the storm moved northeast at around 10 miles per hour. Forecasters warned that the hurricane could produce between 6 and 12 inches of rainfall across parts of Baja California Sur, raising concerns about flooding in affected communities.
Mexican authorities activated emergency preparations as the storm approached.
The government of Sonora suspended nonessential activities, including schools, sports and certain work, in the state capital and more than a dozen municipalities. Meanwhile, the Mexican Navy deployed three vessels capable of delivering assistance to coastal communities cut off by the storm, while local authorities prepared shelters, suspended travel in affected areas and closed ports.
The storm comes amid an active Pacific hurricane season, with forecasters noting that increased tropical activity is consistent with patterns often observed during El Niño years.
