By Zoila Palma: Hurricane Erin, a powerful Category 2 storm, battered North Carolina’s Outer Banks overnight with storm surge, flooding, and destructive waves, even without making landfall.
The massive system is tracking north parallel to the U.S. East Coast and is expected to bring tropical storm conditions and coastal flooding to parts of the mid-Atlantic throughout Thursday.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued storm surge and tropical storm warnings from Cape Lookout, N.C., to Chincoteague, Va., with forecasts of up to four feet of surge along the North Carolina coast and up to three feet possible farther north.
Dangerous rip currents and “life-threatening” surf are expected to impact beaches from the Bahamas to New England, leading many officials to close beaches to swimmers.
Despite repeated warnings, rescues have already been reported, with nearly 100 people pulled from rip currents in Wrightsville Beach, N.C., earlier this week.
Erin, which formed in the eastern Atlantic last week and became the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, continues to generate hazards along much of the Eastern Seaboard.
Tropical storm watches remain in effect for Bermuda as the storm churns offshore, posing threats not only to the Carolinas and Virginia but also to mid-Atlantic and northeastern coastal communities in the coming days.
