International News: Hundreds of Police in Ecuador search for infamous gang leader ‘Fito’ who vanished from prison cell

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hundreds of police in Ecuador are searching for convicted gang leader Adolfo Macías Villamar “Fito”, the leader of Los Choneros gang who disappeared from inside his prison cell on Sunday.

According to the BBC, Fito was being held in the maximum-security wing of a jail in Guayaquil.

Authorities reportedly noticed that he was missing on Sunday and couldn’t find him.

Fito is a notorious criminal suspected of having played a role in the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio last year, whom he had sent death threats to. 

Recently, Fito released a “narcocorrido” music video glorifying his criminal exploits, which was partly recorded inside the jail.

The “narcocorrido” video shows Fito caressing a fighting cockerel and freely chatting to fellow inmates.

The fact that the video could be recorded behind bars suggests that the ban on electronic devices inside the jail had been breached. 

Fito has spent 12 years in prison at La Regional prison.

Authorities say that hundreds of officers were searching La Regional prison in Guayaquil, where he was being held.

But, Fito has escaped from prison before in 2013, Fito and 17 other inmates escaped from La Roca prison and fled in boats.
