By Zoila Palma: Hundreds of U.S. diplomats have signed a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing concerns over the dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The diplomats warn that this move undermines U.S. leadership and security, creating a power vacuum that could be exploited by adversaries like China and Russia, Reuters report.
The letter, expected to be filed through the department’s “dissent channel,” criticizes the January 20 freeze on foreign aid imposed by the Trump administration.
Over 700 diplomats have signed the letter, which argues that halting USAID operations jeopardizes U.S. partnerships, erodes trust with allies, and risks the lives of millions reliant on U.S. assistance.
The freeze has disrupted life-saving programs, despite claims of waivers for emergency aid. USAID operations worldwide, including critical humanitarian relief, have been thrown into disarray, and the reduction of foreign aid contracts by 92% has caused severe economic consequences.
The letter stresses that foreign assistance is not charity, but a strategic tool for U.S. interests, stabilizing regions and preventing conflict.
The dismantling of USAID has drawn legal challenges from contractors who claim the administration’s actions are unlawful. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of these contractors, ordering the release of payments for work already completed.
