By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On August 28, 2024, Honduras announced that it will terminate its longstanding extradition treaty with the United States, Reuters report.

The decision follows remarks by U.S. Ambassador Laura Dogu expressing concerns over a recent meeting between Honduran and Venezuelan defense officials.

In a letter to the U.S. To mbassy, shared on social media by Foreign Minister Enrique Reina, the Honduran government stated its intent to end the treaty.

President Xiomara Castro supported the move, accusing the U.S. of interference in Honduran affairs.

The controversy began after Dogu commented on a meeting between Honduran Defense Minister Jose Manuel Zelaya, military leaders, and Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, who is under indictment in the U.S. for drug trafficking.

Dogu expressed surprise at the meeting, which Reina criticized as an attack on Honduran sovereignty.

The extradition treaty has been used to extradite high-profile figures, including former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was convicted of drug trafficking in the U.S. after being extradited in 2022.
