By Aaron Humes: The presidential election in Honduras hangs in the balance as the official vote count enters its fourth day, marred by technical difficulties and rising tensions. With over 84 percent of the ballots tallied, conservative candidate Nasry Asfura has edged ahead of centrist television presenter Salvador Nasralla by a narrow margin of just 0.3 percentage points, the BBC reports.
The electoral process has faced significant setbacks due to technical outages, which electoral officials have branded “inexcusable.” The National Electoral Council (CNE) has urged voters to remain patient as security is heightened at the venue where votes are being counted.
Frustration boiled over among election officials when reports surfaced of yet another halt in counting due to technical issues on Wednesday. Ana Paola Hall, president of the CNE, attributed the delays to a private company responsible for tabulating results. Hall stated that the firm conducted maintenance without prior notice or coordination with the CNE, exacerbating the already tense situation.
Earlier reports had indicated a lead for Asfura, 67, who has garnered support from U.S. President Donald Trump. The Republican leader has made it clear that continued U.S. aid to Honduras could hinge on Asfura’s victory. However, as the count progressed, Nasralla, 72, temporarily surpassed him in votes, with the two candidates separated by a mere 500 ballots.
Trump has publicly cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process, claiming that the CNE’s shift in results was an attempt to manipulate the election’s outcome. “If they do, there will be hell to pay,” he declared, despite providing no evidence to support his allegations.
As of Thursday, preliminary results indicate the count has shifted back in Asfura’s favor, but officials say the outcome remains uncertain. Both candidates continue to express confidence in their prospects, bolstered by internal party projections.
