By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Honduras President Xiomara Castro recently threatened to end military cooperation with the U.S. if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his plan for mass deportations.
In a New Year’s Day speech, Castro said the expulsion of Hondurans would prompt a reconsideration of U.S.-Honduras military ties, noting that the U.S. has had a military presence in Honduras for decades without compensation.
The U.S. maintains a significant presence at Soto Cano Air Base, used for humanitarian and anti-drug missions, but the U.S. Defense Department declined to comment on Castro’s statement, AP reports.
Castro’s remarks have sparked political backlash in Honduras, with opponents arguing that such threats could harm the country and make its migrants more vulnerable to U.S. actions.
