By Aaron Humes: Hondurans are casting their ballots in a highly polarized presidential election, with U.S. President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Nasry “Tito” Asfura dominating the narrative, the BBC reports. The election is seen as a three-way race between Asfura, representing the right-wing National Party, Rixi Moncada from the leftist Libre party, and Salvador Nasralla, a centrist TV host.
Trump has vowed to cut financial aid to Honduras if Asfura doesn’t win, stating that the US would “not be throwing good money after bad” if the wrong leader is elected. Moncada has accused Trump of meddling in the election, calling his endorsement of Asfura “totally interventionist”.
The US has sent over $193 million to Honduras in the last fiscal year, and despite aid cuts, has provided over $102 million this year. The Trump Administration has already cut $167 million in economic and governance aid earmarked for 2024 and 2025.
Asfura has pledged to bring “development and opportunities for everyone” and facilitate foreign investment. However, his party has faced corruption accusations and scandals. Moncada has committed to protecting natural wealth and combating corruption. Nasralla, the current front-runner, has promised an “open economy” and generating employment.
With 34 percent of voters undecided, the outcome is far from certain. The election will determine the country’s direction, including its relationship with the US, China, and Venezuela. The results are expected to be announced after the polls close at 7 p.m. Belize time.
