By Zoila Palma:  A Maryland pastor and father of three was arrested this week by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying his visa nearly 25 years ago, CNN reports.

Daniel Fuentes Espinal, 54, fled Honduras in 2001 with his wife and infant daughter, seeking safety and stability in the U.S.

He has lived in Maryland ever since, working in construction and serving as a volunteer pastor at Iglesia del Nazareno Jesus Te Ama.

ICE confirmed his arrest on July 21 in Easton, stating Espinal entered the U.S. legally on a six-month visa but never left. He has no criminal record.

Espinal’s daughter, Clarissa Fuentes Diaz, said her father was pulled over after picking up breakfast and construction materials. He was detained without explanation, later transferred to a Louisiana immigration facility. His bond hearing is pending.

Loved ones describe Espinal as a pillar of the community, known for helping the homeless and vulnerable. A GoFundMe campaign for legal fees and family support has raised over $20,000.

Local lawmakers, including Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Reps. Sarah Elfreth and Glenn Ivey, have condemned the arrest, calling it an example of the Trump administration’s “indiscriminate targeting” of immigrants.

Espinal’s family and legal team continue to fight for his release as supporters submit letters on his behalf.
