By Zoila Palma: Honda has issued a major recall of more than 406,000 Civic vehicles in the United States over a potentially dangerous wheel defect that could lead to crashes, injuries, or even death.
The recall, announced on October 31 through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects Honda Civic models from 2016 to 2021 equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels.
According to the automaker, missing or improperly installed steel lug seat inserts could cause the wheel nuts to loosen, increasing the risk of the wheels detaching while driving.
The issue reportedly originated at a now-closed wheel supplier factory in Italy, where unfinished wheels lacking crucial lug inserts were mistakenly shipped as completed products. Honda said it first discovered the problem during a routine inspection in Japan in July 2024 and launched a global investigation soon after. While no crashes or injuries have been reported, the company has urged affected owners to respond promptly once they receive notification letters and to visit a local dealership for a free inspection and wheel replacement.
This recall adds to a growing number of large-scale vehicle recalls in 2025 as automakers face increasing challenges tied to supply chain complexity and third-party manufacturing errors. According to NHTSA data, over 25 million vehicles have been recalled in the U.S. this year alone.
Honda emphasized that it has corrected its quality assurance process and reassured customers that it remains committed to vehicle safety and reliability.
