International News: Homicides in Mexico drop 49% as Sheinbaum administration reports major security gains

By Zoila Palma: Mexico’s homicide rate has fallen sharply, declining by 49 percent compared to the final month of the previous administration, according to figures presented during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s Wednesday morning press conference.

Security officials reported that average daily homicides in May stood at 44.3, down from 86.9 in September 2024, Mexico Newsdaily reports.

Security Minister Omar García Harfuch attributed the reduction to strengthened security operations, including an expanded 120,000-member National Guard and improved intelligence and investigative practices. He said the government’s broader security strategy, introduced in October 2024, has contributed to a sustained downward trend in violent crime.

Authorities also reported major enforcement actions since the start of the current administration. Nearly 54,300 individuals have been arrested for high-impact crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and extortion. Officials said the arrests have significantly reduced criminal activity on the streets and strengthened public safety efforts.

García Harfuch further detailed large-scale seizures and dismantling operations, including 2,382 illegal drug laboratories, 402.8 tonnes of drugs, and 28,739 firearms.

He also noted that 85 current and former public officials have been detained under a “zero impunity” policy, alongside continued cooperation and tensions in Mexico–U.S. security coordination and ongoing USMCA trade discussions.
