By Zoila Palma: Haribo has issued a recall in the Netherlands after cannabis was found in some one-kilo bags of its Happy Cola F!ZZ candy, CNN reports.
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) launched an investigation after several people, including children, fell ill.
Tests confirmed the presence of cannabis in the cola-flavored gummies. Dutch police are now investigating the source of the contamination.
Haribo is recalling affected bags with a best-before date of January 2026 as a precaution, noting that only three bags were confirmed contaminated. The recall is limited to a specific batch in the Netherlands, and products in other countries are not affected.
The company is cooperating with authorities to determine how the contamination occurred. Incidents involving drug-laced candy, though rare in commercial products, have occurred elsewhere, including a 2023 case in Jamaica where over 60 schoolchildren were hospitalized.
