By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The number of internally displaced people in Haiti has tripled to over one million due to escalating gang violence, the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Tuesday.
Displacement is particularly severe in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where gang control has surged to nearly 85%, causing a breakdown in essential services and widespread food insecurity, BBC reports.
Between 2023 and 2024, displacement in the capital rose by 87%, with many people fleeing multiple times as gangs expanded their control.
Over 5,600 people were killed in gang-related violence in 2024 alone. Most displaced individuals have moved to rural areas, where resources are scarce. Half of those displaced are children, with families living in makeshift shelters and facing serious health risks.
The situation follows the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and remains worsened by a lack of effective international intervention.
A UN-backed security force, deployed in June, has struggled to gain ground against heavily armed gangs.
Meanwhile, Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council, tasked with organizing elections, remains in disarray and has made little progress.
