By Zoila Palma: The University Hospital of Mirebalais, once a symbol of progress in Haiti’s fragile healthcare system, has closed its doors indefinitely due to gang violence and growing insecurity, Miami Herald reports.
Built in 2013 by Partners In Health and envisioned by global health advocate Dr. Paul Farmer, the $24 million, state-of-the-art facility offered free care for thousands each week, including dialysis and cancer treatments.
It stood as a rare beacon of medical excellence and hope in Haiti, especially for rural communities.
But after armed gangs overran the city of Mirebalais on March 31—attacking police, freeing hundreds from prison, and looting clinics—the hospital’s leadership evacuated patients and staff, later confirming operations would not resume “until further notice.”
The closure comes as Haiti’s health system collapses under widespread gang control, aid cuts, and displacement.
Over 51,000 people have been forced to flee in the Central Plateau alone, with hospitals like St. Therese in Hinche and the Albert Schweitzer Hospital now overwhelmed and under-resourced.
The shutdown of Mirebalais, which once cared for up to 850 patients a day, is a devastating blow in a country where less than 40% of hospitals in the capital are still functioning and access to care is increasingly out of reach.
