By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: An armed gang shot at a U.S. embassy armored van in Port-au-Prince on Monday, injuring a Haitian contractor, Yahoo reports.
The employee, a gardener for the embassy housing complex, was traveling to work with others when the attack occurred. He was taken to a medical facility and is in stable condition.
The gang, using high-powered rifles, ambushed the van from an alley along a dirt road between the embassy and housing complex. The U.S. State Department condemned the violence and reiterated its focus on the safety of embassy personnel.
This marks the second attack on U.S. embassy assets in three months.
In October, gangs shot at two embassy vehicles. The escalating violence reflects the growing power of Haiti’s gangs, who have targeted U.S. jetliners, a U.N. helicopter, and carried out several massacres.
Over 5,600 people died in 2023 due to gang violence, with more than 1 million displaced.
The U.N. Security Council will meet this week to discuss the deteriorating security situation and the international response, including the Kenya-led security mission in Haiti.
