International News: Haiti Transitional Council takes reins from Prime Minister Ariel Henry

By Aaron Humes: CNN reports that Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation on Thursday to a group of nine called the Transitional Council.

Finance Minister Michael Patrick Boisvert was sworn in as interim prime minister, stating, “Haiti, our country, is at a crossroads in the search for solutions to overcome this multidimensional political crisis, that has lasted for so long, and the consequences of which are detrimental to the population, to property, and both public and private infrastructures.”

The Transitional Council, composed of seven voting members and two non-voting observers, will work to choose a new Prime Minister and a new government. They will have some of the powers the President normally has until a new President is elected in 2026. The Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) has welcomed the council’s formation and hopes it will bring a new beginning for Haiti.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that the violence and chaos in Haiti have made it difficult for people to get the help they need. The head of the UN children’s agency, UNICEF, Catherine Russell, has said that three million children in Haiti need humanitarian assistance.

The gangs in Haiti have said that they want Ariel Henry to leave, but they are still attacking the police and looting schools, hospitals, and pharmacies. The gangs now control most of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, making it hard for people to get the medical care and other services they need.
