International News: Haiti Police confirm death of gang leader in security operation

By Zoila Palma:  Haiti’s National Police (PNH) has confirmed the death of Mathias Saintil, the leader of the Boston gang, following a law enforcement operation in Port-au-Prince.

In a social media statement on Friday, police said Saintil was neutralised during the operation. A police source reported that he was struck by multiple bullets and later died at a hospital.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime welcomed the development, declaring that there was “one less gang leader” and vowing that the fight to free the country from armed groups would continue.

Haiti has faced years of escalating gang violence, particularly following the 2021 assassination of then-President Jovenel Moise. Political instability and the absence of national elections have contributed to a prolonged crisis, allowing armed groups to expand their influence. According to the United Nations, gangs control as much as 90 percent of Port-au-Prince, including major roads and maritime ports.

The violence has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, with at least 1.4 million people displaced from their homes.

The UN reported that 1,123 people were killed and another 440 injured between July and October this year.
