International News: Haiti faces ‘Humanitarian Catastrophe’ amid surge in violence

By Zoila Palma: Haiti is experiencing a “humanitarian catastrophe” as escalating violence forces people from their homes and overwhelms health facilities, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Gangs have intensified their battles with police, leaving civilians trapped and raising concerns about a potential cholera outbreak, AFP reports.

MSF reported treating 90 victims of violence last week at its emergency center in Port-au-Prince, double the usual number. The ongoing unrest, worsened by gang control of 85% of the capital, has displaced around one million people.

With worsening sanitation and the rainy season approaching, MSF warns the crisis could spiral further without urgent intervention. “The scale of this crisis far exceeds what MSF can respond to alone,” said Christophe Garnier, MSF’s mission chief in Haiti.
