International News: Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago declare State of Emergency amid escalating violence

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) have declared states of emergency (SoE) in response to escalating violence.

Haiti implemented its SoE on December 22, 2024, following armed gang attacks, set to last until January 21, 2025.

T&T declared its own SoE eight days later, amid a record 623 murders in 2024. Both countries aim to curb gang violence, illegal firearms, and organized crime, Times Caribbean reported.

This crisis highlights broader issues across the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), with countries like Jamaica and Belize frequently using SoEs to tackle crime.

T&T’s SoE focuses on dismantling gangs and reducing illegal weapon circulation, while Haiti targets heavily armed gangs.

Both nations emphasize the need for regional cooperation to address rising crime and strengthen public safety.
