By Zoila Palma: Guyana says it remains confident of a favorable outcome after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concluded oral hearings in the long-running border dispute with Venezuela, with the court now set to deliberate before issuing a final, legally binding judgment.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall said the completion of both written and oral proceedings before the International Court of Justice represents what he described as a victory for international law and the rules-based order.
He stressed that both states must resolve disputes peacefully and said Guyana has pledged to abide by whatever decision the court delivers, Caribbean Today reports.
Venezuela, however, reiterated its rejection of the court’s authority in the case.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez told the ICJ that her country will not accept any ruling arising from the process, arguing that the matter should be settled politically under the 1966 Geneva Agreement and not through judicial determination.
The dispute was brought before the ICJ in 2018 by Guyana, seeking confirmation of the legal validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award that established the boundary with Venezuela.
That award, accepted for decades, was later challenged by Venezuela in 1962, reviving competing claims over the territory. The case is being examined under the framework of the Geneva Agreement after earlier bilateral efforts failed.
At the centre of the dispute is the oil-rich Essequibo, which comprises a large portion of Guyana’s territory.
Guyana maintains confidence that the ICJ will uphold the 1899 boundary as final and binding.
