By Zoila Palma: At least 11 people were killed and around 70, including women and children, were kidnapped by armed men on motorbikes in Sabongarin Damri village, Zamfara State, late Saturday.
According to Reuters, residents said the attackers opened fire indiscriminately before abducting victims.
Zamfara has become a hotspot for banditry, with frequent abductions and violence. Victims are often held for ransom, sometimes for months.
Police confirmed over 60 people were taken in the latest incident. The government said 175 kidnap victims were rescued between April and July across northwest and central Nigeria, but provided no comparison to previous periods.
Local police have yet to comment on the recent attack.
