International News: Gunman kills Canadian tourist, injures 13 in shooting at Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramids

By Zoila Palma: A gunman opened fire on tourists at the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan on Monday, killing one Canadian national and injuring at least 13 others, according to Mexican authorities.

The attack unfolded at the historic site north of Mexico City, one of the country’s most visited landmarks, NPR reports.

Officials identified the shooter as 27-year-old Julio Cesar Jasso, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities said he acted alone, and security personnel recovered a firearm, knife, and ammunition at the scene. Seven victims were wounded by gunfire, while others were injured amid the chaos as people attempted to flee.

Those hospitalized included six Americans, three Colombians, one Russian, two Brazilians, and one Canadian. Authorities said the victims ranged in age from 6 to 61. The shooting began shortly after 11:30 a.m. as dozens of tourists were gathered near the Pyramid of the Moon, with witnesses reporting that people scrambled for safety as shots rang out.

Video footage shared by local media showed the gunman standing atop one of the pyramids while firing, as visitors ducked or ran. Witnesses described scenes of panic, with some individuals lying flat to avoid being targeted while others attempted to descend the structure. One Canadian tourist recounted confusion at first, mistaking the gunfire for fireworks before realizing the danger.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the incident would be fully investigated and expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.
