International News: Guatemala rules out risk of Hantavirus outbreak

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, the Guatemalan Ministry of Health issued a statement saying that it is maintaining technical monitoring of the international event related to cases of the disease on a cruise ship, which is under investigation and being managed by the corresponding health authorities.

Hantavirus is uncommon but can cause serious complications. It is transmitted through contact with the urine, feces, or saliva of infected rodents.

The Ministry noted that this can occur by inhaling contaminated particles while cleaning enclosed spaces such as warehouses, abandoned houses, or areas with these types of animals.

Human-to-human transmission is rare and occurs only with close and prolonged contact in some types of the virus, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) said.

The Ministry denied that there is a health alert and asked the public to seek information only from official channels and avoid sharing alarming or false posts.

It assured the public that it will continue to provide timely updates should any changes occur in the situation.

The news that has generated concern is linked to a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, bound for the South Atlantic.
