International News: Guatemala mourns death of 8 police officers following gang violence

By Zoila Palma: The Policia Nacional Civil (PNC) Guatemala is mourning the death of 8 police officers following recent eruption of gang violence.

Gang member inmates reportedly held 46 workers hostage and riots erupted in 3 prisons.

However, the PNC was able to regain control of the prisons.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo has since declared a nationwide State of Emergency and classes were suspended for today.

PNC Director David Boteo also visited hospitals where injured police officers are recovering.

Guatemalan officials indicate that the riots were coordinated by members of the Barrio 18 gangs.

PNC Guatemala has joined the nation in mourning the deaths of the 8 officers.

“Praying to God for strength and comfort for their families in the face of such irreparable losses,” PNC expressed.
