International News: Guatemala launches “Vaccination in Action” campaign to strengthen Measles response

By Zoila Palma: The Government of Guatemala, through the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), has launched the “Vaccination in Action Against Measles” containment campaign aimed at intensifying vaccination efforts and strengthening the country’s response to a measles outbreak in the department of Guatemala.

A statement from the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization noted that the campaign will initially focus on the municipalities of Guatemala City, Mixco, and San Juan Sacatepéquez, where officials are prioritizing protection for populations considered at higher risk and working to close vaccination coverage gaps.

The initiative is expected to run for 9 weeks and will later expand in phases to other municipalities within the department.

The official launch took place at the Metropolitan University Center of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala and brought together national authorities, academics, healthcare workers, and international cooperation partners supporting the country’s public health response.

During the campaign, health teams will conduct mini-rallies at strategic public locations such as shopping malls, plazas, schools, and businesses, while also carrying out door-to-door vaccination drives to improve access in priority communities.

The Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization are providing technical support to Guatemala’s national measles response.

The organizations are assisting with epidemiological surveillance, case investigations, data analysis, logistics, risk communication, and territorial micro-planning to strengthen outbreak containment efforts.

Health officials said the campaign is also being supported through PAHO/WHO’s Regional Revolving Fund, which helps ensure timely access to safe and effective vaccines.
