The country aims to play a role in regional solutions to immigration issues, despite challenges with deportations from nations like Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Haiti, USA Today reports.
As President-elect Trump plans to increase deportations, Guatemala has proactively prepared, meeting with Trump’s team to discuss border security, migration, and drug trafficking.
While it already receives 14 deportation flights weekly under President Biden, officials expect a significant rise in deportations.
Guatemala plans to focus on reintegrating deported citizens by leveraging their skills, particularly in sectors like construction and services.
However, officials are wary of economic impacts if remittances from the U.S. decline, given that remittances constitute a significant portion of the country’s GDP.
