By Zoila Palma: Governments across Latin America are ramping up preparations for the impacts of El Niño, as meteorologists warn the climate phenomenon is already underway and expected to strengthen throughout the remainder of the year.
Authorities are mobilizing firefighters, activating contingency plans, and preparing water, energy, and transportation systems to reduce the effects of drought, flooding, extreme heat, and other climate-related disruptions, AP reports.
Experts say the gradual development of El Niño provides countries with valuable time to prepare before conditions worsen.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is urging governments to act now, warning that delays in preparedness could leave countries vulnerable to widespread economic and environmental damage.
Rodney Martinez, the WMO’s representative for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, stressed that El Niño is no longer a possibility but an ongoing event. He called on governments to secure alternative energy sources, protect vulnerable communities, and strengthen public services before the most severe impacts arrive.
Several countries have already launched major preparedness efforts.
Experts warn that the effects of El Niño will vary across the region, with drought and heat threatening food security and increasing wildfire risks in parts of Central America, while excessive rainfall could trigger floods, damage infrastructure, contaminate water supplies, and increase the spread of disease elsewhere.
