By Zoila Palma: Today, Google announced it will invest $15 billion over the next five years to build an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest-ever investment in India.
According to Reuters, the project, located in the port city of Visakhapatnam, will become Google’s biggest AI hub outside the United States, with an initial capacity of 1 gigawatt. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the plan reflects the company’s commitment to “accelerate India’s own AI mission,” as part of a broader global push to expand data infrastructure amid surging demand for AI-driven services.
The announcement comes at a time of growing diplomatic strain between Washington and New Delhi, with trade talks stalled and both sides imposing tariffs on key goods.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to reduce reliance on foreign products, while U.S. companies have faced calls for boycotts in India.
Despite tensions, Google said the project will create “substantial economic and societal opportunities” for both countries.
Behind the scenes, Indian officials have reportedly assured U.S. business leaders of a continued friendly investment climate, even as public sentiment remains divided.
