By Zoila Palma: A global medical consensus has officially renamed Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) following a 14-year international effort led by Australia’s Monash University to improve diagnosis and treatment of the condition affecting more than 170 million women worldwide.
Researchers said the former name, PCOS, incorrectly focused attention on ovarian cysts and failed to reflect the broader hormonal and metabolic nature of the disorder.
Experts noted that there is no actual increase in abnormal cysts on the ovaries, contributing to misunderstandings, delayed diagnoses, and inadequate care for patients, AMJ reports.
Professor Helena Teede, who led the renaming process, said decades of research revealed that the condition affects hormones, weight, metabolic and mental health, skin, and reproductive health. She described the lack of awareness and delayed diagnosis experienced by patients as “heart breaking.”
The renaming process involved collaboration among medical experts and people living with the condition across six continents. International co-lead Professor Terhi Piltonen of University of Oulu said the new name was designed to be scientifically accurate while also considering cultural sensitivities in countries where reproductive terminology may contribute to stigma.
The transition to the name PMOS will take place over the next three years through an international awareness and education campaign targeting healthcare professionals, governments, and researchers.
The new terminology is expected to be fully implemented in the 2028 International Guideline update, with experts saying the change marks a major step toward improved clinical care, research, and patient outcomes worldwide.
