By Zoila Palma: Infighting between rival gang factions in Guayaquil, Ecuador, left 22 people dead on Thursday, authorities reported.
Gun battles erupted in the northern neighborhood of Nueva Prosperina, involving members of the Los Tiguerones gang, who are fighting for control of territory, Reuters report.
Police launched a major operation, carrying out 200 searches, seizing weapons, and arresting 14 individuals, including two minors. Many of those killed or arrested had criminal records linked to robbery and drug trafficking.
The violence comes as Ecuador intensifies its crackdown on drug-trafficking gangs, with President Daniel Noboa backing stronger military and police action in the region.
