Accompanied by Emma Coronel, Guzmán’s wife, Colón recently premiered her music video “La Señora,” showcasing a glamorous world filled with elegance and energy.
The video not only highlights Colón’s transition into music but also pays tribute to Coronel, who was released from prison last year after serving a sentence related to drug trafficking.
According to the Associated Press, Colón, now performing under the name “Mariel La Abogada,” is leveraging her past associations to carve out a niche in the burgeoning genre of regional Mexican music.
With a background steeped in both music and law, Colón always dreamed of being a singer but pursued law at her family’s insistence.
Her journey into the legal world began serendipitously in 2018, when she answered a Craigslist ad for a paralegal position, eventually joining Guzmán’s defense team. Despite the stigma attached to her former clients, Colón embraces her unique story, stating, “I sleep very well at night,” reflecting on the complexities of her career.
As Colón releases new music that resonates with themes of redemption and resilience, the genre itself is experiencing a global surge, especially with the rise of artists like Peso Pluma.
However, the glorification of narco culture within this music raises questions about its impact on society.
Colón defends her work, asserting that it reflects real-life struggles rather than merely celebrating crime.
