International News: French students blockade schools and Universities ahead of countrywide strike

By Zoila Palma:  Today, students across France blocked dozens of high schools and universities as protests against education reforms and deteriorating public services continued, with trade unions preparing for a nationwide strike on Thursday.

The demonstrations resumed following a two-week autumn break, with students demanding renovations to deteriorating school buildings, smaller class sizes and increased university enrollment opportunities.

Authorities reported that 48 of the country’s 3,700 high schools were blocked, while 51 of 184 higher education institutions experienced disruptions. However, the USL student union claimed that approximately 500 educational establishments were affected, AFP reports.

Protests were reported in several cities, including Paris, Rennes, Lyon and Toulouse, with tensions emerging between students and authorities.

The protests form part of a wider movement against rising living costs and inadequate public services that has drawn hundreds of thousands of people into the streets in recent weeks.
